D-I Women’s Discussion

  • After taking the Southwest Regional title from their rivals, UC San Diego overtook Stanford in our rankings as well, climbing up to the #2 spot.
  • British Columbia’s capitulation to Oregon in the Northwest final combined with North Carolina’s dominance of the Atlantic Coast shuffled up the 4-6 spots in this week’s rankings, restoring the same order as we saw at the end of the regular season.
  • West Chester surges forward four spots to #12, thanks to an upset of Ohio State and a second place finish at Ohio Valley Regionals.
  • Strong showings from Florida and Cal Poly SLO moved them both up four spots. Florida won the Southeast, including a solid win over Auburn in the final. SLO came up just a few throws short against UCSB in the game to go at Southwest Regionals, after getting two wins over California.
  • Washington University and Northwestern joined the rankings for their work in reaching the game to go in their respective regions and putting up strong fights. Wash U couldn’t finish off Colorado at South Central Regionals while Northwestern hung tough with Michigan in the Great Lakes.
  • Vermont and Minnesota both failed to get close enough to Nationals to remain in the rankings.

D-I Men’s Discussion

  • After an upset-filled Regionals weekend, the rankings welcomed four new teams and said goodbye to four others. Atlantic Coast Cinderellas Georgetown and Maryland landed together at #20 and #21. Texas survived an impressive South Central Regional, earning the #17 spot. Northwestern took down an underwhelming Great Lakes Regionals.
  • Most of the victims of the upsets mentioned above find themselves outside the rankings now. UNC Wilmington and NC State shocked by missing Nationals, and Colorado State’s struggles included a loss to Kansas and quarterfinal exit at SC Regionals. LSU was the other team to fall, with an uninspiring performance at Southeast Regionals.
  • Speaking of Southeast Regionals, the winner and loser of the final went in very different directions. Georgia climbed to #8 after pounding their opposition; Florida dropped a whopping 10 positions after losing three straight games to go, including to Florida State.
  • Victoria is headed to Nationals for the first time, earning the #16 placement after defeating Western Washington (who dropped six spots) twice, including in the game to go.

D-III Women’s Discussion

  • Williams’ 11-7 victory over Bates in the New England Regional Championship was all the evidence we needed to move them back to #1.
  • Oberlin landed at #4, capping off their season with a 5-0 run through Ohio Valley Regionals. They have only lost two games in 2018, both to regionally competitive D-I programs.
  • The powers of the North Central are headed in different directions. St. Olaf won the region and gained three spots in the poll, while Carleton slid six spots to #20 after a semifinal loss to Winona State at Regionals. Winona State entered the rankings just above Carleton at #19.
  • Pacific Lutheran and Bowdoin fell four spots each. PLU was crushed in the Northwest final by Puget Sound while Bowdoin failed to even make the game to go at NE Regionals.
  • Hamilton and Brandeis both reached the top 25 with their play. Brandeis notched a win over Mount Holyoke at New England Regionals while Hamilton showed grit fighting through the backdoor bracket of Metro East Regionals to reach the game to go.
  • Swarthmore, Skidmore, and Grinnell all fell from the top 25. Skidmore won a single game at ME Regionals, Swarthmore was knocked out of Nationals contention early by Ohio Wesleyan, and Grinnell was unable to attend Regionals.

D-III Men’s Discussion

  • Despite each suffering a loss at Regionals, the top four remained unchanged, as their overall performances at their respective events outweighed their losses.
  • Missouri S&T makes a huge leap in the rankings after beating Air Force to win the South Central.
  • Mary Washington maintained their spot above Richmond after the two split their games at Regionals, with MW having the better point differential in those two games.
  • Bowdoin, Oberlin, RPI, and North Park all made significant moves upward in the rankings after strong performances at Regionals, with North Park making the biggest move for their dominance in the Great Lakes.
  • Luther and Xavier both made returns to the rankings, with Luther picking up a great win over Michigan Tech and Xavier beating Shippensburg in pool play at Regionals.
  • Haverford’s run to the semifinals of Ohio Valley Regionals saw them break into the top 25.
